Playing With Tools

So here I sit, 1:15 in the morning, after being inspired by some of the most intelligent human beings I have ever had the pleasure of listening to, writing about whatever comes to mind.  This in particular having to do with the new experience of using Tumblr.com as a blogging platform.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of a complimentary pass to listen to Gary Vaynerchuk speak about his book, Crush It!  It has inspired me to do exactly that.  One of his recommendations was to check out Tumblr.com which was in response to an audience-member’s question which asked him to call off 6 of the most influential websites of the future.

So far, I am very impressed.  I typically stick to Wordpress self-hosted platforms, but to be honest, over the past 2 years, I have probably spent more time screwing around with design, layout, plug-ins, and updates rather than producing quality content.  Great, so I know how to install and hack a theme and plug-ins.  Big deal!  I’m not a programmer, I’m a creator, and I need to be creating content, not shifting it from left to right, right to left.

So, here’s the scoop.  If I find tools that can further my goals, I will use them.  If they take up time and produce nothing, I will abandon them.  I’m not suggesting I am going to abandon Wordpress.  In fact, far from it.  I will, however, stop toying with it and solidify my choice in theme and plug-ins until the next best thing comes out.

Over the past 5 years, Wordpress has evolved from a clunky platform to a pretty dominant streamlined system with easy upgrades.  I can only see it getting better.  But, that’s not what I need to be focusing on.  The average joe non-computer dork has no idea of the differences between Wordpress, Wordpress.com, TypePad, Moveabletype, Tumblr, ActiveRain, etc., etc., so why care about it.

And with that, I’ll sign off and head to sleepyville.
